Out-of-Bounds Planets: a display of potential disruptive energy

In 2017, a topic introduced to me by my dear best friend and wise astrology consultant, Michelle, was the idea of an out-of-bounds planet. I've since found a great article by the late Pamela Welch (shared here), and comments from Steven Forrest. I'll try and simplify what this idea means.

An OOB planet occurs when it falls on the declination markers that go beyond the range of the  23°26’ tilt of the Earth's axis (North and South) of the equator. This can be found depending on the software program you're using, or in an ephemeris.

The significance of an OOB planet is that it acts like a maverick energy: it knows no limits, can be very disruptive, and cause a great deal of unsettled energy for the dynamic it represents. It could be said that an OOB planet has a very Uranus-like quality to it: nothing as expected, and it breaks rules, boundaries, and expectations of the behaviors that would be considered traditional.

An OOB moon position often indicates a pattern of disruptive behavior from the individual's mother, and there can be follow-up responses whereby the person responds in society in ways that are filled with over-emphasis on security, emotional mood swings, and personal needs. It's the most common OOB planet. An OOB Mars could possibly be over-reactive for aggressive behaviors--or in the case of Tiger Woods, sexual appetite and masculine energy. In Welch's article, she notes that Henry Kissinger has this position--and clarifies it with the fact that he participated in covert decisions in Vietnam and also in Chile, when a dictator replaced a democratically-elected leader. Daredevil Evel Knievel had an OOB Venus, and his flamboyant lifestyle as a performer was a potential example of this planet's needs for going over the edge in action and social display. It may come as no surprise to anyone who follows radio talk show host Howard Stern that he has an OOB Mercury.

It should be noted that the majority of charts done for clients and individuals will not show OOB planets. It's not as common a possibility as more traditional aspects and dynamics. However, it does bear consideration and a potential "aha!" answer to certain possibilities which may give further clues to the psyche.

Welch does recognize that the major asteroids can be OOB, but I would go carefully with this analysis unless the person interpreting the chart is comfortable with their purpose.

Planets mean "We're Open for Business"

As I'm now teaching for a 10-month session at a major university of Finance and Economics in Nanchang, China (I have English writing and reading), my students are business-minded--but interested in astrology because I've introduced it to them. They seemed overwhelmed at the sight of a chart display, but I assured them that Chinese characters (over 4,000) are a lot harder to learn, especially since astrology only uses about 25 symbols, and they're not as complex.

So I thought "How would I explain the energies of the planets?" and came up with a business structure for them. (I've already done transportation, using a train ride, on this site.) So here's what I conceived:

(1) The Sun: the president, and the name on the company building. The founder of the institution.
(2) The Moon: how the public-at-large feels about the company, and what is the goal/target of the company objective.
(3) Mercury: Public relations and all forms of information exchange, including hardware/software programs.
(4) Venus: Interior design and appearance of offices, including what form of architecture and how the entrance/lobby is planned.
(5) Mars: what form of physical activities are offered for employees. Is there a gym membership offered, or an on-site facility? Who takes care of the building itself: what kind of maintenance program for landscaping and interior clean-up?
(6) Jupiter: what long-range growth plans are in line, and what direction is the company taking to pursue these? How much and what is in line for bonuses, raises, promotions, and community donations?
(7) Saturn: Internal security. Who and what kind of privacy of the facility is offered, and how is it kept up? What about record-keeping/accounting?
(8) Uranus: creative development. How is research and development of new innovative ideas brought forward, and do employees have a say in this? (I'm thinking of 3M and the man who invented Post-It notes. It was his own idea.)
9) Neptune: Vacation time. What kind of package is offered for those who need to get away for a while, and is there some place on-site where employees can have a private quiet moment? Is there some form of yoga or meditation time built into the workday to enhance productivity?
10) Pluto: Recycling and trash removal. Who does the dirty work, and how "green" is the company?

Special options for the 4 major asteroids, Chiron, and the Nodes:
(1) Ceres: what programs are there for stay-at-home workers with children or day-care options?
(2) Juno: what benefits are there for spouses or partners?
(3) Vesta: does the company have a dedicated community program for charitable contributions?
(4) Pallas Athena: what community programs are endorsed or promoted by the company for those who are in need of social support/advocacy?
(5) Chiron: what mental-physical health benefits are part of the company program for employees?
(6) North-South Nodes: is this a new start-up company idea, or does it have a past history?

Venus in Scorpio: "I've Love You to Death or Die Trying."

Venus is in Her detriment (lacking awareness of the higher qualities of the planet's energy) in Scorpio: jealousy, intensity of ownership toward objects of affection and property, and desires for sexual fulfillment which may be violent if not agreeable to the selected "victim" of choice. (Also, think of a female praying mantis: if you know what she does to her mate, you'll get the idea.) Emotions and passions run extremely strong during this time--and revenge can be a bitter result in love-hate partnerships, especially if trust has been betrayed. In Greek mythology, Medea was outraged that Jason had cast her aside for another woman--and in her rage, she killed her own children. The old saying "Hell knows no fury like a scorned woman" is VERY true and possible during the transit of Venus in Scorpio!

However, it's not all for worry with the goddess of Love in this sign: a dramatic personality may find new outlets for attention and display (with a touch of "come closer if you dare"), and occult studies and mysteries (such as an enjoyment of solving mysteries or an appreciation of forensic sciences) may be heightened. Just be sure you're not Dr. Frankenstein building a bride for your latest creation--he or she may be intent on love with a painfully dangerous twist!

"All in Love is Fair and Equal," says Venus in Libra

There is refinement, sharing, appreciation, union, and cooperation to bring to a loved one, family, friends, and more when Venus slips into Libra. Most of all, this is a time for identifying, validating, and pledging oneself to a committed relationship.
Even though Venus in Libra is traditionally about benevolence and willingness between lovers, it can be tricky too: a strong desire to please and not be challenging; to be accepting and even yielding more than ever or before; manipulation can also be a factor if it means a victory or achieved result.
And it's also a time to be lazy, wanting to take the easy way out or the line of least resistance. You can also be very indecisive. You may need people and find it difficult to feel comfortable in your own company.
So what should you do? Remember that you have boundaries; you may compromise your own in a willingness of bliss, desire, or desperation. At least know that this is a time to find peace within and with each other. You may go back and fix up an old matter, or at least be more cooperative with your Significant Other. Honor that person--be aware that they are sharing their life with you--and that this is a gift. Thank your partner; spend some time showing your appreciation--and be willing to accept it from them.
And enjoy. Venus rules Libra, so it's also about pleasure and fun with someone else.

Venus in Virgo: "There is a Time and Place for Love--and it's Qualified by Specifics"

"She/he loves me, she/he loves me not--because of the following reasons," says Venus in Virgo, and you're either on the receiving end or handing down the hard facts. This is the Goddess of Pleasure & Enjoyment in a cool, distant state of affection, with emphasis on personal boundaries and conditions: "What do you mean when {you} say 'I love you, baby'. Be more specific!"
Venus in Virgo says, "I'll believe it when you show me--and actions speak louder than words" will make or break your romantic mood. Doubt, discernment, critiquing and second-guessing: these are some of Virgo's traits, and Venus would rather say "No thanks" rather than have to tell you that you're not meeting Her standards as a partner. Venus in Virgo will love sincerely and with earnestness, but you've got to pass a lengthy interview of qualifications. And no: sweet talk and charm doesn't make it work: there's a mental notebook of "must-have" conditions.
On a positive note, Venus in Virgo is quite willing to do something for a social project that serves the community: helping decorate or improve a food kitchen that feeds those in need, or making sure the area of work is spotless, organized, and kept functional. A fun date for a Venus in Virgo would be at the gym--but don't expect to share the shower unless your nails are trimmed and you've brought your own soap.

Love goes Flutterby in Social Circles with Venus in Gemini

With Venus in Gemini, intellectual and social endeavors and pursuits are more favorable—including “second-guessing” a relationship and clarifying intentions from you or a partner. Therefore, it’s a good time to socialize and work on communications skills with loved ones (and those whom you wish to pursue)—with new technologies that encourage reading and writing, expressing and directing curiosity through short-term endeavors and trips, and even classroom experiences.

However—DO expect that “two-for-one” deals are possible now in romance: Venus in Gemini brings out “duality” in others, so that “I have an alternative in case this doesn’t work out” love affairs and relationships are possible.
And a musical reminder from Gustav Holst about Gemini qualities, courtesy of Mercury.

Venus in Pisces: the Exaltation of Love as a Force of Attraction and Creation

(From The Astrologer's Handbook by Sakoian and Acker) - Venus in Pisces.

(Author's note: I have this position opposite my ascendant in Virgo. The Feminine Principle totally inspires me, and totally overwhelms me. At the same time.)

Venus in the sign Pisces is in its exaltation.  Here the love principle reaches its highest evolutionary development; the natives marry for love, no other considerations being of any consequence. Venus in this sign manifests deep compassion and sympathy converging on spirituality—the understanding of and unity with all life.

The universality of Venus in Aquarius, combined with the empathy and emotional depth of Pisces—which is ruled by Neptune—produces an emotional rapport with the life of all creatures in the universe.  The individual sees the Eternal Life principle flowing through all manifestation, uniting the soul with all life.
These people have a high capacity to understand the feelings of others; they know what it is like to be in another person’s shoes. The experience of having been through all the signs of the Zodiac gives the soul the ability to identify with all types of humanity.
People with this position of Venus are romantic and sensitive. Unless they receive clear demonstrations of love and affection from others, they feel lonely and disappointed.
Sometimes the disappointment leads to a feeling of martyrdom, which may be sublimated into religious expressions. Or it may lead to neurotic tendencies or mental illness.  The Neptunian rulership of Pisces gives intuitive inspiration to Venus, making these people capable of drawing on higher dimensions for resources in artistic, poetic, and musical creation; many great composers, artists, and poets have Venus in Pisces. This Venus position probably has more innate ability for inspired artistic creativity than any other placements.
Because the natives are highly sensitive to the suffering of others, people may take advantage of their sympathies unless their discrimination is well developed. Their extreme emotional sensitivity means they are often afraid of being hurt through rejection; thus they hesitate to express their feelings, suffering the pangs of love in silence.  Sometimes they miss romantic opportunities. They are inclined to become emotionally dependent on others or have others become emotionally dependent on them.
If Venus is afflicted in Pisces, there can be excessive sentimentality, lack of discrimination in choosing love objects, laziness, hypersensitivity, and over-dependence on others.  Strong emotions can stand in the way of objective perception of reality.

Venus is Exalted in Pisces
To mature to its full fruition, Venus, which rules the principle of love and attraction, must go through the entire cycle of experience in the Zodiac. Only when we can put ourselves in another person’s shoes and feel with him or her what he feels can we be sympathetically attuned to that person and feel capable of loving them. Love in the true sense requires that we be attuned to all creation.
Only in Pisces, where Venus works with the transcendental vibrations of Neptune and the goodwill of Jupiter, does such a high goal reach fulfillment.
Love is the most transcendent and exalted product of the evolutionary process; only one who has lived through all the experience of humanity—as represented by Pisces, the last sign of the Zodiac—can fully experience the meaning of it.  Even this is limited, since Pisces is but the end of one turn on the spiral of evolution, the next spiral holding a greater promise of the expansion of consciousness and the unfolding of new creative powers.

Mercury Retrograde: Lost Information & time for personal reflection

About four times a year, a 4-6 week occurrence happens in when Mercury goes retrograde: all types of communication go 'unsteady.' It is often observed that papers are misplaced, documents and important transactions are not processed as planned, people often complain that they can't focus or think clearly, appointments are canceled or postponed, hiring decisions are delayed, or other matters of sharing information are cast adrift until that point when Mercury once again regains its position as leader and overtakes the Earth in its orbit. Travel plans go astray more so during a Mercury retro because Mercury rules short trips.

What's a retrograde? A retrograde indicates an internalization process; influences and actions that would be energized for the planet(s) that are in a retro cycle are slower to manifest:  they are more ‘inside than outside’ and take longer to complete, comprehend, or activate. As a physical happening, this is when the Earth overtakes the other planet in our respective orbits around the Sun (*the other planets also go “retro”; the only one that doesn’t is the Moon)--and it appears that the slower moving one is going 'backwards.' We have all see this while driving on the highway or in trains: the landscape (or vehicle overtaken) looks to be going in reverse.  Of course, that does not really happen, but the optical illusion is there.  Mercury is the fastest moving planet that we know of in its orbit around the Sun: it takes approximately 88 days.

In astrological terms, Mercury represents our capacity to communicate and think, thereby "ruling" (or 'sponsoring') all types of mental activities and delivery of thoughts: written and verbal, as well as contracts, signings of such, and the industries that provide these services (phones, computers, electronics). Which signs get zinged the most? Well, Gemini and Virgo, because they're ruled by Mercury. Not that they're exclusive, but they seem to feel it sooner. The same for Gemini and Virgo moon signs and ascendants.

Has this any good potential--aside from feeling that one has lost his or her mind for a temporary period of time or that it's not appropriate to sign that important paper? Yes: some people find they can actually focus more clearly on a single idea during Mercury retrograde. Some writers (myself included) and people who may be considered hyperactive or ADD may find they can actually do more work on a regimented schedule during a Mercury retrograde. I have found some of my better writing efforts have come during a time frame like this.

Also, matters that went wrong before but have better potential now for a renewal or second chance may find results during a Mercury retrograde. Sales, "meeting someone again" for the second time to repair or join again in a reunion often works better because it's a "we've done this before" awareness that allows for the subconscious self to blend mind and emotion without trying to out-think the idea on a conscious level.

Venus in Capricorn: Love is a Working Relationship built by effort (or money)

With Venus in Capricorn, you can plan (a key word) for hard work, effort, persistence, and purpose to achieve a Relationship Worth Keeping. Venus is interested in either love or money, and if one comes with the other, so much the better. If you're hoping to win over someone who is looking for wealth and happiness in one package (and you qualify), now is your time.

Often considered a cold placement, Venus here does have a practical side: there is the ability to repress emotions and feelings, but this can also be warmed up quite nicely in a romantic endeavor. And that's the difference when Venus transits through Capricorn: this is a time to win over personal and professional connections and show some business thinking. It's an excellent time to purchase items that have high value and historical legacy.

An excellent place to meet your special new love while Venus is in Capricorn: the corporate area (if you're allowed to mingle and not upset the human resources office). Also consider the ski slopes, or on a hiking tour: Venus in Capricorn will be at the high peaks looking for love.

And just in case you're inclined or partial to the country, look for a farm girl who is wholesome, sincere, sweet, industrious, and good with animals. She's also a Venus in Capricorn type and attuned to Venus in an earthy way--and very well at home running things alongside you.

Steven Forrest discusses the 2nd Saturn Return

Master astrologer Steven Forrest discusses the 2nd Saturn return that arrives between age 59-60 and heralds the end of mid-life and the lessons ahead. This is a vital part of the Life Cycle and a very significant story to hear.

Venus in Sagittarius: Love in the Right Places and Open Spaces

When Venus prepares to make Her grand entrance into Sagittarius, we can expect more "Jupiterian" opportunities for love: perhaps some personal growth in our relationships and partnerships, or something (or someone) who brings "higher Truths and Wisdom" to our eyes (and senses). Because Venus Herself said "I do what with whom I want," we could also expect that a partner may say "I'd like to be more expansive and indulgent with myself in some pleasurable way." (Your imagination does not need suggestions if you have a swinging lifestyle already.)

Where would one find Venus in Sagittarius (aside from the bedroom)? Perhaps love or just enjoying social connections or making new ones in places like universities, colleges, religious retreats, ashrams, houses of worship, in legal studies or advisement, at the casino (Sagittarius likes to bet big--see you at the baccarat table, Mr. Bond, or at the Las Vegas Million-Dollar Poker stakes); publishing that steamy romance novel that you've always known is more autobiographical than you want to admit until now.

Or...because Sagittarius is the sign of the Centaur, perhaps you may consider looking for love at the horse races, or even (if you're in the right crowd) at the polo matches. Since running is also a Sagittarian sport, perhaps the track & field events or even at the cricket matches.

Oh. One last thing: since our Venus-in-Sagittarius theme is Lady Godiva, a suggestion: if you ARE looking for love in an equestrian environment, may I suggest that proper attire be the rule? Saddle up, I say, and ride--perhaps (cough) reverse-cowgirl-style?!

Astrological Fear of Success leads to Self-Undoing

Do you know someone who is afraid of accomplishment?  How about someone whose astrological patterns show "a fear of success" or "a rejection of Life Challenges": someone who subconsciously attracts or manifests conditions which sabotages his/her life (or that of someone in collaboration) so that plans go astray in spite of the best intentions or desires. Or they express desire for happiness, but the fear of "the unknown" and its potential for growing past and through life challenges makes them reject opportunities that would otherwise bring them wisdom.

It's as if they generate a force field of Mercury/Mars retrograde in their lives. These actions are externalized through others, especially key family members, in the form of illness, accident, and other forms of controlled chaos.  Each time a plan is set or about to be implemented, someone close to the subject has an event upon which the subject then postpones, cancels, or delays whatever he/she was going to activate, again, with a second party's involvement.  (Hence, the Mars/Mercury retrograde parallel.)  I've known Crabs who do this with controlled helplessness, but this is slightly different: the subject DOES want to move forward or activate a project or goal, but is too emotionally caught up in the lives of others.

I believe there are patterns which may be clues: the moon in a water sign (especially Cancer) with Mars in tight or inharmonious aspect (conjunction, square, opposition--or even quincunx); Capricorn ascendant (I've seen this twice--they were content to be "tethered goats), and a cardinal sign Sun (or the cusp of Cancer-Leo: the Lion for dramatic effort).  The Aries sun type WANTS to initiate or activate, but keeps being sidetracked; the Libra type is too caught up in relationship issues, including co-dependency. And the Capricorn ambition to achieve is legendary; in this case, the objective (or mountain top) that is never reached.

I've also seen this with personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars) in the 12th house--especially in water signs. (The individual gets so emotionally caught up in decision-making that they can't get going. Try telling a Mars in Pisces 12th house to take action! "On your mark, get set...{sink to the bottom!}"

A Jupiter/Saturn opposition or--believe it or not--the conjunction--can also indicate this: the person has great large-scale ideas (Jupiter), but is frustrated (or worried) about achieving them (Saturn). I call that aspect "driving with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake pedal." On the other hand, this could also indicate someone who DOES achieve in spite of obstacles or delays.

Again, psychological astrology looks at the individual and offers options: there is not a "you will do this" condition, but rather a set of choices.  Success or frustration is one example of how and why psychological astrology shows us the way we open or close the doors in our lives.

Taking a Train Ride with the Planets

Here, the planets (and the Sun and Moon) serve as the staff and accessories of a train trip to...your destination in Life.

Sun: The type of train you’re riding on: passenger, working, or other. Obviously, you want to get somewhere by being someone, yes?

Moon: The reason you’re on the ride--where you’re going and what you want on the journey.  We supply what you need--including a full moon for your viewing at night.  An eclipse may or may not be available, depending on departure and destination.

Mercury: the conductor who gives and approves the passes; also, the communication and information about the train, including tickets and fees.

Venus:  the dining/sleeping cars.  Comfort is always part of the service--and don't forget to thank the porter!
We provide a cuisine to match your taste--and check out the dessert specials!

Mars: The locomotive.  Bullet train, if you wish. Faster, stronger, better.

Jupiter: the amenities onboard--as you can see, we strive for luxury for the best!

Saturn:  schedules, routines, and responsibilities of the staff. Promptness is a business, you know.

Uranus: the entertainment--and excitement of the unusual. Viva la difference. Why, Agatha Christie was onboard the other day with Monsieur Poirot...on film, that is.

Neptune:  travelers on pilgrimages--we do travel to India, of course, as well as the Holy Land...and Tibet as well.

Pluto: the fuel that runs the locomotive.  Coal is so...out of fashion--and, well...nuclear power just has such...energy.

"Outer Planet People" (OPPs) are "late bloomers in life"

OPPs (Outer Planet People):
Living on the Edge - or
"Oops, I'm an 'Opps' "
(Potential) Strong Personality; charismatic appearance or energy
* Significant Focus on key life area(s)
–Self Identity - Home -  Partnerships - Career
* Unusual views, upheavals in life - chaos
* Escapism, fantasy lifestyle, attracted to mystical ways and views
* Domineering, transformation-bringing experiences and ideas
Key placement of Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto
1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house location
Conjunction (alignment) within 6 degrees of North-South-East-West grid:
Career, Home, Relationships, Personality
“Late Bloomers” in life: often find Mission and Purpose after age 30

OPPs (Outer Planet People) represent qualities and dynamics of Psychological Astrology (PA) that bring out the “differences” in an individual which are not readily understood either by the subject him/herself or the society in which they live.  These souls are influenced by stronger "outside" influences than the mainstream, yet they are vital to the progressive forces that sculpt and mold our societies.

The concept of “Outer Planet People” should be addressed.  These individuals (born with a strong placement of Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto) are often “out of synch” with society; they are truly walking on pathways that may not follow tradition, norms, or even be anything less than revolutionary and incendiary in their nature.  They may be prophets of behaviors, values, attitudes, or intuitive knowledge about behaviors that society may presently find beyond acceptability or be struggling with (gay marriage) or lifestyles that openly oppose current traditions and standards (responsible stewardship of land via recycling and “green” sources of energy, or home schooling), or even involvement with ideas from other cultures and their incorporation into today’s social patterns (using foreign doctors or medical services instead of U.S.-based facilities).

OPPs can be seen as those individuals with one of these planets in a tight connection by degree and angle to one of the Four Direction Markers of Identity (“the angles” that form a cross shape):  the ascendant/1st house cusp (personality/appearance), the Imum Coeli (IC; “lower heavens” in Latin), or bottom of the chart (home/roots of being), the descendant (7th house cusp opposite the ascendant, and the 10th house cusp, or midheaven (MC; the “medium coeli”). How would we see such a person?  Each planet takes its own properties as an ambassador of energy, and so there is no hard-and-fast rule.

Consider instead “The Terms of Individuality” as a facet of the psyche.  These are potential factors which may help identify for personal or professional reasons the subtle, unseen qualities of the psyche which may be very prominent in the presentation and display of major life areas:  the personality/outlet of self toward the World-at-Large; the home environment (and therefore a place of safety and retreat when an individual needs to heal or regroup); relationships in business and professional endeavors (thus showing how the subject handles cooperation strategies); and finally, the career sector, which drives so many people and yet leaves others unfazed by lives of simple labor.

As seen through the outer planetary influences of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, these offer stronger representation of those subtle cues that the chart’s blueprint offers for personal and professional analyses.  Some of these factors which contribute to the “alien” awareness of an individual are those which emphasize a need for uniqueness and “standing apart from the crowd.”  For instance, consider the awareness of “being born in the wrong place and time,” a factor explored in past-life consciousness and memory recall through approved regressive hypnosis consultation.  This is not necessarily any kind of dominant need for distance from people in general nor a sign of reclusiveness.  Rather, reincarnation is not overlooked in astrology; it is another matter for a separate discussion.

Again, because PA deals with the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious levels of the mind, we need more flexibility in preserving the humanistic view of behavior and cause & effect as well as honoring the spiritual principles of our existence, no matter what the individual’s preferences are toward his/her selection of identifying with the Creator.

This generates the obvious "Suppose someone has Outer Planets hitting more than one of the Direction Markers?”  That is why the art of astro-psychology has that humanistic level and the spiritual as well:  we are dealing with the dynamics of the psyche, and each person is unique in his or her own way.

However, key phrases associated with the planet may be easier with interpretation.  Regardless, the Life Areas of Experience (the houses) that govern Personality, Appearance, Early Childhood, Home and the need for environment/safety, Partnerships and Bonding Needs and Expressions, and Career and Status Needs are all powerfully interlocked with the life of an OPP soul.  If an OPP planet is located by angle or proximity of degree to an approved 0-90-180 degree coordinate to the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house, this soul has key issues with one of these dynamics.  Also, if a 90-degree challenge comes by angle or aspect to the degree markers on the 4th/10th house cusp doorways, the possibility of stressful responses and reactions to the mother-figure (4th house) and father-figure/authority figure (10th house) are likely to be submerged in the subject’s subconscious and a dynamic part of the personality.

Uranus direct (and Uranus transits): Thrill-seekers and Wild Rides

Here we go again: it's time for "Uranus goes Direct," and YOU get to be the rider on the the Unpredictable, Unexpected, Unusual, and Exciting Roller Coaster planet. Up-is-down & down-is-up once again.

During the transits of Uranus to your natal chart, you will experience phenomena that are out of accord with your everyday life.  The events that occur will be unusual, upsetting, sudden, and unexpected.  For this reason, astrologers are often reluctant about giving precise consultations about Uranian activities.  Almost all that can be said for sure is to “expect the unexpected, and let the craziness be your guide.”

But the transits of Uranus are not to be feared or harmful; rather, they confront us regarding our extent of what we are unwilling to accept regarding newness and change in our lives.  Uranus challenges the rigid structures in life that most people work so hard to build.  Many people value regularity and predictability so much that they will even sacrifice personal happiness to get it.  (Think of all the unhappy marriages that continue only because both persons are afraid of the insecurities that breaking up would bring.)

But this kind of rigidity is ultimately destructive to life in its highest sense—change is inevitable, and the potential to adapt to it and continue is vital.  Life is—or should be—a constant, ongoing confrontation between yourself and the world, with an energy that keeps everything fresh and lively.  The problem with this confrontation, however, is that there is always the danger of losing, so most people avoid the confrontation or circumstances within if they can.  To survive half-dead, they reason, is better than to lose.  However, those are not the only alternatives:  it is only fear that makes it seem that way.

Some birth signs are more intuitively understanding of a Uranus transit:  the Cardinal signs (Aries-Cancer-Libra-Capricorn) are governed by major life events and change, so even though an upheaval may come, they seem to be ready to face it. (Aries may say, “Oh, a new adventure that I never considered--but it's something I can sink my teeth into!”; Cancer will think of how it will affect their home and security ("I didn't plan on yet another home improvement!"); Libra will anticipate how to keep peace with the relationships it has established--or how to handle that exotic new connection; Capricorn will look to see how it affects a long-term legacy that has been a lifetime goal--and how to manage the challenges to the long-term project.)

The Fixed signs (Taurus-Leo-Scorpio-Aquarius) often resist the hardest (especially Taurians, who do not like to change until they are ready—and Uranus does not give any chance for planning this; a Leo may wonder how it will reflect upon their need for attention and love given and received; a Scorpio will fight it relentlessly, then cast off the old conditions as though they were a dead issue, but Aquarians, being ruled by Uranus, often go with it after an initial stand-off, anticipating a new sense of freedom of self.

The Mutable signs (Gemini-Virgo-Sagittarius-Pisces) are more adaptable to a Uranus transit time.  (Gemini might find an opportunity to learn something new and wild; Virgo will incorporate the maintenance of schedules into their calibrating-sorting mindset to ensure things get done--sort of a "chaos management"; Sagittarians may seek new unique and visionary venues of philosophy of lifestyles and values that are socially advanced; and Pisces may sigh quietly and just consider it another burden to be accepted in a lifestyle that requires sacrifice regardless--and that the storm will someday mellow when Life's demands are done.

Life, Death, Love, Release, Renewal: Saturn in Scorpio

Or if you prefer, the Book of Ecclesiastes: for every thing, there is a time and a purpose in your life to learn. Consider this the message of Saturn in Scorpio: the Process of Learning to Let Go and Renew Yourself in ways that are Evolutionary for your Psyche and Soul.
This involves what--and who--you desire. Your Ability to Manifest (The Secret) now come through more powerfully than ever. The trial of fire will come through seeing your Path develop as Release and Recovery become themes: fears if you have them are confronted in Life & Death events, and worries, obstacles, delays and loss are encountered, then reborn in the next phase that was necessary to be prepared.
The Discomfort of Being Emotionally Torn Apart by Scorpio is also passionate--which isn't just sexual, but also about LIVING. What have you found out and appreciated because you felt DETERMINED to Survive? And when it's over, you'll never look again in the same way at the small details that don't matter--and how to release the lies that keep you trapped in your mind and don't need.

Uranus the Liberator remodels my Life!

She said, "Mitch! My life is turning upside down!! What's going on--and while you're at it, why is it so crazy and hard to handle?"

Answer:
Uranus by transit in the 1st house of Personality.  Like so: "Uranus is the Social Rebel (think "The Grateful Dead" energy) which says "I Break the Rules of Society BECAUSE Society needs a wake-up call." Uranus, and its sponsoring sign of Aquarius, really allows us to overthrow and overcome blockage, both personal and socially, on an individual and global scale.

Uranus is a liberator--it wants us to break free from limitation--the "anti-Saturn" influence. Its purpose is evolution, experimentation, and growth. Although Uranus can sometimes live in reaction mode, it motivates us to think and act outside of the box. In fact, Uranus in its purest form is intuition itself. By house, the position of Uranus shows where individuals look to stir things up, put a new spin on situations, and go against established thought or order.

Uranus doesn't act like other planetary energies: it has no respect or use for regulations, structures, routines. In your 1st house of Personality and Appearance, you can expect that people "see" you differently, even if not on the surface--but they can sense it. It will also impact on extension the other side of your chart: the 7th house of Relationships and Partnerships. Uranus in the 1st alters the way an individual projects personal energies onto others. You are likely to seek, nay demand, freedom in the way you present yourself to the world. Dressing simply but quirky, you will have no problems in asserting yourself.

You are not shy in letting everyone know where you stand on issues. In fact you take pride in presenting your unique perspective. "I am a simple soul with few wants and needs," is what you tell yourself. All you can feel is an altruistic desire to change the world! Friends and relatives probably find you a trifle erratic. They know you to be good-hearted and genuine about your feelings. Your passions rise fast and you lose interest at the same rate. Why is this happening? It's likely about Personal Change within that indicates you are being prepared for a shift in lifestyle for reasons that are not only about you, but your place in the larger whole of society. In short, you're experiencing what I call "being a Cosmic Tuning Fork." Welcome to MY life!

Planets - Symbols and Directors of Psychological Drive and Energy

One of the main topics in psychological astrology (and astrology in general) are the meanings of the planets.  As I've mentioned earlier, they represent actions and behavior potentials in our psyche:  they're sort of a reflection of how we act and respond, why, and the impact and influences of these actions.  Think of the planets as though you're eating something special:  what did it taste like, what did you eat, what kind of food source was it, and how do you feel about eating it?

Obviously, everyone has his or her own preferences--but the planets don't always let us decide what we like.  I'm sure someone will say that "Saturn is like being forced to eat those nasty vegetables that {I} don't like." Or maybe Uranus is being offered something unusual and exotic--maybe from another culture.
Pluto, I imagine, is some sort of laxative--you change when you "digest" Pluto.  Neptune is...something that's got some mind-altering nature to it: alcohol, mescaline, or even mushrooms.  Mars...well, it's been cooked on a fire; that's for sure, and Venus?  Oh, chocolate anytime, please.  And good wine or liqueur too.
The moon is your comfort food:  you NEED that to feel better when you're upset.  Mercury is brain food:  you think better after you've eaten it.
Jupiter is just a full-blown feast of something you enjoy, and the Sun is that special meal which is your favorite.
So...let's meet the planets again and see what they do (when they're NOT food.)

Neptune - Dissolving/Merging Into and Yearning For Completion, Union with Cosmos; Spiritual fulfillment and release

Pluto – Control and Expressing Power to Transform Self and Others;misuse of power, anger, and sexual issues

No, I didn't overlook our planet Earth, but it is not a primary focus.
However, it does serve a secondary role:

Earth:  A View of the psyche from "within"

An “internal” view of the birth (Sun) sign
A hidden facet of personality and identity
Opposite perspective to birth sign polarity
Resembles Jung’s Shadow Self
(Not used in charts)

The Black Moon Lilith's Struggles for Feminine Power

My thanks to lady astrologer and psychological consultant Franie LeKlerc of Montreal, Quebec.

Lilith — The Black Moon
This article is, of necessity, a very brief introduction to the presence of Lilith in the astrology chart. She is a complex representative of the more hidden pieces of our psyches, and certainly requires greater treatment and more detailed analysis than is contained here.

The article below is intended only to stir an interest in Lilith's influence in astrology, and is a prelude to a book-in-progress, Lilith: The Dark Moon published in The Second Road newsletter, October 1998 by Catt Foy.

A little-known element in astrology charts, Lilith is known as the "Dark Moon" and, as such, represents our "dark" or hidden emotional selves. According to Lois Daton, author of "Lilith, The Planet of the Doodler," the physical existence of Lilith was confirmed by the United States Weather Bureau in 1879. Lilith is the name used for THREE different celestial bodies - one is located in the asteroid belt and is not our subject here, the other is an invisible body orbiting the earth approximately three times farther away than the Moon, Luna. It is this Lilith which is of interest here. The 3rd Lilith is the Dark Moon, responsible for teaching us lessons about power struggles.
Lilith's placement in the chart is especially important to women, and represents the power of the original woman. In a man's chart, Lilith's placement will reveal the hidden power struggles or other issues he may have, resolved or unresolved, with the women in his life. Again, note this is NOT the Black Moon Lilith, but the Dark Moon. She is a separate part of the Black Moon. She deals with the Feminine Power struggles.

Lilith is perhaps best understood in contrast to her counterpart, the visible Moon, Luna. Luna receives her self-fulfillment and self-definition through the nurturing of others. Lilith is self-fulfilled and self-defined. Luna represents the visible emotions; Lilith is those emotions which remain hidden or secret. Lilith lives behind-the-scenes, usually undetected. She can be sneaky or deceptive, but she can also indicate our ability to be subtle, to guide and manage events and people without being intrusive. She is our ability to be private, and her placement in the chart will tell you what the native feels most secretive about.

As a Moon, Lilith is also associated with mothering, but she is the strength of a mother protecting her cubs. Luna is soft and kind and nurturing. Lilith is strong, a disciplinarian, and will kill any who threaten the well-being of her offspring. Lilith is protective and self-protective.  She protects herself from her own toxic emotions, becoming the guardian of shame, guilt, hatred, vengefulness, bitterness, envy and jealousy.

We look for Lilith in our charts to discover which defense mechanisms we employ to hide our wounding.  She is also the femme fatale - the sexually powerful woman. She affects dreams, especially sexual ones, and is an influence in trances, hypnotism, the channeling of entities, inter-dimensional beings, and possession.

Here is a brief overview of Lilith's placement in the natal charts. As with anything in astrology, her influence must be interpreted within the context of the total chart.

Lilith in Aries is straight-forward about her sexuality and may use it to feel powerful. Applied in a negative manner, there may be temper tantrums or bratty behavior.

Lilith in Taurus may hide money or possessions, and there will be a great deal of secrecy regarding finances. This can also indicate miserliness, or a refusal to share one's resources with others.

Gemini - When Lilith hides herself among the twins, she may exhibit a chameleon-like ability to be whoever she must be at the moment, hiding her true thoughts and feelings. If used improperly, the native may be considered "two-faced" or be a vicious gossip.

Cancer - Hidden emotions may come out in ways that affect the physical health. When expressed in ways that are healthy, Lilith's influence here makes the native a powerful parent, or an activist for the protection of children. When negative, there may be chronic or psychomatic illness, or the tendency toward martyrdom.

Lilith in Leo wants to be admired, but she'll never admit it. In creative expression, she will do things her own way and never feel obliged to explain herself. Taken to extremes, she becomes the prima donna, demanding and unforgiving.

Lilith in Virgo will often make the native very secretive or repressed in their sexual expression, and there will be much attention to hygiene and health-related details. When negative, Lilith in Virgo can be very cold and aloof, or extremely critical of the habits of others.

Lilith in Libra may find herself concerned with the legalistic side of power. She is a defender of women here, supportive of laws that curtail abuse or sexual crimes. Taken to extremes, Lilith in Libra may be vindictive against those she perceives to be offenders, and in relationships may be clinging, jealous or manipulative.

Scorpio - There are some astrologers who believe that Lilith is the co-ruler of Scorpio, along with Pluto. When placed here, she is powerfully sexual, hypnotic, seductive and wise. When under a negative influence, she can become bitter, vengeful or obsessed.

Lilith in Sagittarius may hide her emotions beneath a facade of humor or a mask of kindness. She may keep her personal philosophies secret from others, keeping her own counsel. In the negative, this placement can indicate haughtiness, self-righteousness, and prejudice.

Lilith in Capricorn will hardly ever share any emotions, and these natives may seem unapproachable. Achievement and status will be the method employed to feed the hidden need for emotional contact. At its extremes, here is the anal retentive who must control everything.

Lilith in Aquarius will probably mask the hidden emotions with a series of ever-changing kaleidoscopic surface emotions, and will seem fascinating and elusive to others. The native may be chimerical, fluttering like a fairy from one situation to the next. At its worst, Lilith in Aquarius is irresponsible, remote, and refuses to listen to others.

Pisces - Lilith is already secretive, and doubly so in Pisces. This is usually the person who has emotional wounding buried so deeply that they don't even know it themselves. Lilith's placement here may instigate behaviors which even the native finds baffling, and is often associated with passive-aggressive and unconscious behavioral patterns.
