The vertex and anti-vertex represent involuntary actions and experiences over which we have no control. Therefore, the vertex/anti-vertex are tied more to fate and karmic patterns. The vertex is an indicator of the kind of people who may be the momentum behind important changes in our lives.
It also represents innate qualities that are not being used, as well as karmic circumstances that must be dealt with. The anti-vertex represents those qualities that others can see in us that we are not aware of, as well as our abilities to become more aware of those talents.
On a secondary personal level, the vertex acts like another Descendant (7th house cusp attraction factor). In synastry, a match between a Sun-Vertex, Moon-Vertex, Venus-Vertex, Mars-Vertex, or Ascendant/Descendant Vertex is a strong indicator of a possible "love at first sight" encounter or an intense attraction for someone.
The vertex will fall into either the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th house** of the birth chart, with the following emphasis (**A very rare 4th or 9th house Vertex is possible if the birth location is at an extremely high or low latitude. I answered a few people on this in comments): For a 3/9: I would consider a strong attachment to siblings, a need for short trips as a lifestyle (perhaps living in a camper or travel vehicle), or a display or array of computers around one's work place, and an affiliation with a religious organization or highly philosophical ideal, an interest for a country that is noted for mountainous terrain, an identification with law enforcement practice or legal authority, and long-distance endurance sports. For a 4/10, the home would be emphasized, along with family, one parent, security, and a base foundation when the Vertex is in the 4th house, and the career and projects of influence, fame, and status when the Anti-Vertex is placed in the 10th, where one could work on team endeavors--perhaps like associating with a sports team but not being a major influence--for instance, a loyal fan who enthusiastically participates in activities before games and shows great enthusiasm with displays of attention during the event.
A 5th house vertex is "The Lover," (because the 5th house is ruled by Leo). These people are very creative by nature, with great artistic ability. Romance and love are very important to them, and they fall in and out of love, looking for that "special person" in their life. A weakness is that the 5th house vertex person becomes neglectful of all else in their life except for their ideal of love.
A 5th house vertex will yield an 11th house anti-vertex, which indicates a person who does not realize that they are more accepted and wanted by the many friends that they have made. The individual must accept those things in themselves that others appreciate and recognize. Once they accept their social skills and the potential that can come forward in working with others, they will realize that they are more goal-oriented than they understood.
The 6th house vertex is "The Worker," (because the 6th house is ruled by Virgo). There is a strong need to be of service to others, and a need to seek out experiences and circumstances to help others. Work is extremely important, with emphasis placed on detail and precision in career obligations. There can be activities that require specific talents, often in the fields of health and medicine (because of Virgo's rulership of the 6th house).
A 6th house vertex will yield a 12th house anti-vertex. The 12th house corresponds to our subconscious mind, and therefore these individuals are very psychic and attuned to their intuition. Attempts to attune oneself through meditation to the Higher Mind is very important, as the subconscious mind can overpower the conscious mind. This can cause confusion in actions, and these people should always go with their feelings.
A 7th house vertex is "The Partner," (because the 7th house is ruled by Libra). Marriage and partnerships are very important to these people, and contentment in marriage is needed for true happiness. Balance in relationships, both personal and professional, are needed for the individual to explore ideas and obtain valuable insights for critical decisions. These people must have peace and balance in their lives, and they feel lost without someone else with whom to interact.
A 7th house vertex will yield a 1st house anti-vertex, and the enterprising, originating side of the Partner will arise. This will bring forward an Arian-like nature, wanting to start new objectives and ideas, to "get the ball rolling." This person gains much personal satisfaction by the knowledge that they were the driving force to start a new project. Once this person realizes the importance of initiating projects independently of others, they will gain great strength and accomplishment.
An 8th house vertex is "The Mystic," (because the 8th house is ruled by Scorpio). This person is involved with the exploration of the occult, the hidden secrets and mysteries of Life and Death. This person may become involved with the study of yoga, astrology, meditation into past lives, or other metaphysical studies. There will be an undercurrent of strong psychic abilities, physical and sexual power and regeneration, and the ability to overcome extreme obstacles and setbacks in life. These individuals are intense and expressive in their desire for their personal will to see their goals carried through. There can also be outward circumstances as well as personal actions that make them change themselves in a dramatic, powerful way.
An 8th house vertex will yield a 2nd house anti-vertex. This indicates a person who is subconsciously materialistic and involved with finances, personal belongings, and valuables. This individual will find themselves facing occasional periods of difficulties in earning a living or maintaining a certain level of material comfort. During these times, the person will be forced to evaluate their image of self-worth and a positive self-concept.

I really like your site. Excellent content. Please continue posting such profound cotent.
thank you! Vertex is very interesting.
vertex on 8th house is right on!:)
Some of the most informative information found on the web with regards to the elusive Vertex! Thank you kind Sir!
Good question, as the 9th house Vertex is very rare and occurs only at extreme northern/southern latitudes of birth. The emphasis would be more Sagittarian in lifestyle and presentation: interests in Higher Social Philosophies, Long-distance travel, enthusiasm for outdoor experiences, and a thirst for knowledge.
Thank you very much for your reply to the 9th house vertex quetsion. :)
A very good article!
What does 4th house aquarius vertex mean? Yes I was born near equator. Every site I've looked at insisted vertex poss only 5th through 8th. So thanks for pointing out 4th and 90th are poss .Thank you.
I would have to say that a 4th house Vertex (and yes, I've seen them very rarely in charts) would bring an awareness of family patterns, one parent in particular depending on your moon sign, the home setting or residence, and the end-of-life experience as a focal point. In turn, the anti-vertex in the 10th house would be where you would find a group consciousness outlet: career and status, but also the influence of the other parent.
Because you have the Vertex in Aquarius, I would say your home life was very eclectic and unusual, with a lot of personal freedom growing up in your environment--possibly that your parents decided to go against mainstream values and ideals, and instead raising a family where there were more global-humanitarian projects being discussed or even displayed as part of the family lifestyle: perhaps deciding to live off the grid in some form, or embracing a communal residence. In turn, the Anti-Vertex in Leo would be something that you find yourself drawn to whereby you gain a group effort as part of the outlet for your success, perhaps in some form of entertainment or the arts. (So: how close am I in my evaluation? I'd be happy to know your answers! And thanks for asking!!)
hello, i;ve been reading your blog and have found it very interesting. I have 4th house vertex in libra along side juno (retrograde) could you please give me some information on this aspect
Thanks very much! I have vertex in Aquarius 4th house and have been curious about it since no one says it can be in 4th house. What you've said about Aquarius 4th house vertex is quite true. i had unusual home life and lots lots of freedom growing up. For the rest, i dont quite understand much... if i get what you say right, i would say it's true that i love working and always have higher entusiasm working in team.
I think you are absolutely right. I have a 4th house vertex in Aquarius conjunction IC and North node in third house. My formative years were spent in our ancestral home (joint/extended family set up) where we children were left to play unless it was time to study but we were mostly left to ourselves.. our family spoke of humanitarian values and still continue to do so.. my parents always spoke of spiritual wealth and value systems.. I don't know how the anti vertex in 10 conjunct DC works out. I have a pretty good career but I am into social sciences (I started my doctoral research young when I was 24) which is to do people and questioning the status quo. But I am much to young to detect a pattern already. Maybe in a few years...
Thanks for the article, one of those rare pieces that talks of vertex in 4 :-D
Great article!! Glad someone is able to shed light on the 4th house vertex. I'm wondering - what does a 4th house vertex in Virgo mean? I was born pretty much on the equator. Thanks!
I have vertex in the 8th house
I have vertex in the 8th house what does this mean ?
OMG! Thank you for adding Vertex in 4th house!!!! I have searched for this for a long time! Do I use Placidus or Whole signs for vertex? With Placidus I have it in my 4th house in Pisces and in whole signs I have it in 5th house. I like to use Placidus because I think it’s more fated in the sense that we’re like prisoners of time and space. And where the universe or should I say warden places your energy is where it should be. As opposed to Whole signs kinda diminishing a fraction of the importance of time. Am I wrong?
I would say you should consider the location of your birth. Placidus works better in my view with most charts UNLESS the person is born in extreme northern or southern latitudes. In that case, I would go with a Koch chart.
Regarding the Vertex in the 8th: I would say there would be natural interests in social awareness of life-and-death issues, but also about intimacy and sharing of resources. Psychology and life-beyond-death studies would be helpful. I strongly recommend researching Dr. Michael Newton's material: Destiny of Souls and Journey of Souls. As the anti-vertex would fall in the 2nd house, there could also be a way of finding income through sharing these ideas. Certainly, it could be a part of your life work too.
Hi, I would like to know how does my vertex in Capricorn in the 4th house would affect me? I read somewhere that having the anti-vertex in the 10th house is somewhat tragic, and I’m just really confused on what this could mean :(
Regarding a 4th house Vertex/10th house anti-vertex and its status (the vertex) in Capricorn (and the ruler being Cancer): first, there's no "unfortunate" placement or sign/planet. It's all about Life Lessons--and we all have the opportunities. With a 4th house vertex, I'm sure you are more aware and sensitive of your family (or the potential lack of appreciation they may show you?). But I'm sure your home is a place where you show nurturing, caring, and sensitivity. In Capricorn, I'm sure you value and appreciate quality and something of value: perhaps wanting or providing materials such as stone, wood, or other lasting structure. With the 10th house anti-vertex (in Cancer), you naturally understand the capacity to help protect and care for others in fields like nursing, food management, home construction, travel management (hotels), or even working with children (maternity support in hospitals). Please consider yourself a blessed soul for having such empathy in these matters.
Hi!
What does a Scorpio Vertex in 4th house plus a Taurus Antivertex in 10th house mean? Cant find a lot of info on it.
Mitchell, thanks so much for the guidance. I’m one of the rare Vertex > 4th house > Aquarius people (born 18.45 degrees N of the Equator, if that’s relevant). However, my childhood was far from the one described in one of the comments above. It was plagued with emotional and physical abuse, conscious cruelty, controlling and smothering behavior, parental mental illness, volatility and destructive behavior, etc. (I survived! All is well.) Is there an aspect of Vertex > 4th house > Aquarius that I’m missing, since it’s so different to the one described above? It’s the only element/planet I have on my 4th house. Thanks!
With the Moon-Pluto conjunction and especially in the 1st, I'd say you may have found your early childhood dominated by your mother's need for power and control. With the Vertex in the 8th and in Taurus, I think this was due to her own issues over her sexuality and how she experienced herself learning about it. I would say with an 8th house vertex that you will also learn these concepts and have to decide whether to accept her influence or develop your own and be able to share the wisdom gained with others with whom you have intimate relationships.
What does a retrograde vertex in your natal mean?
I've never seen a retrograde vertex--and being that it's a hypothetical point and not a true planet/body, I'd like to see your chart first before I would say anything. Just email me your birth data so I can see it.
